Whether Georgia will lose the chance to join the European Union in case of the adoption of the law "On transparency of foreign influence" will be decided as a result of consultations with the European Union states, said the Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Germany, Sebastian Fischer.

"Last year, as a result of protesting this draft law by tens of thousands of representatives of Georgian civil society, it was removed from the agenda. Freedom of the press and media is the basis of any democracy and an important prerequisite for EU membership.

Georgia received the status of a candidate for EU membership at the end of last year and a historic chance to join, and they know about it," said the Spokesperson of the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Asked whether Georgia will lose this chance if the law is adopted, Fisher said that it will be decided after consultations with EU member states.

On April 3, the parliamentary majority leader of the ruling Georgian Dream party, Mamuka Mdinaradze, announced the reintroduction of the draft law on foreign agents, which was dropped last year after the massive rallies on March 7-9. According to Mdinaradze, the content of the bill remains the same, the only change is in the title: the word “agent” in it has been removed and the title has been replaced with “Organization Pursuing the Interests of a Foreign Power”. The decision has drawn sharp criticism from the civil society and opposition within the country and from Georgia’s international partners.
