Chairman of the Parliament of Georgia, Shalva Papuashvili said on Friday that the representatives of the diplomatic corps accredited in Georgia are not invited to attend the opening session of the 11th convocation of the Parliament.

"As for the ambassadors, they are not invited to attend the opening session of the 11th convocation of the Parliament. This is our internal, state issue, as for the elections and the first session of the parliament. In order to minimize the wrong influence of foreigners, the involvement of ambassadors or other countries in this process is not necessary", - Papuashvili said.

When asked about Papuashvili's statement, Romanian Ambassador to Georgia, Razvan Rotundu said that in case of invitation some Embassies would have attended some not.

  • "I can tell you that some Embassies would have attended some not," he told the Accent.
  • "If I am not invited I do not go anywhere," Ambassador Rotundu added.

As a rule, the representatives of the diplomatic corps accredited in Georgia are invited to attend the first session of the newly elected parliament.

On November 21, former Prime Minister of Georgia and the leader of Gakharia-For Georgia party Giorgi Gakharia held a briefing and called on the representatives of the diplomatic corps accredited in Georgia not to attend the opening session of the 11th convocation of the Parliament to show that "they don’t recognize the legitimacy of the fraudulent election results".

The first session of the 11th convocation of the Georgian Parliament has been set for November 25.

The opposition had said it plans to hold the biggest rally near the Parliament on November 25.
