The enlargement process with regard to Georgia is at a standstill, which is regrettable and I fear that this historic opportunity for Georgia may be lost, the EU Ambassador to Georgia, Pawel Herczynski, told journalists in Tbilisi.

He responded to a question about the statements of journalists, opposition politicians and activists, according to which “they are being summoned to court for their posts related to the Georgian Dream MPs.”

“It is my policy not to judge the comments of others, but my duty is to state the position of the European Union. As the European Union, we always condemn violence. Violence by anyone and in any form. Violence is unacceptable. At the same time, the responsibility for violence lies primarily with the authorities. What we have been seeing for many days is violence, brutality and complete impunity,” said Pawel Herczynski.

Asked what could be the way out of the crisis, the ambassador replied that “dialogue is needed.”

"It is not my job to tell any party what to do or what not to do. What I really want to see is a conversation among Georgians, a dialogue is needed, and I sincerely hope that EU integration will prevail, that all political forces supporting EU integration will consider this a national priority. I hope that the existing differences will be overcome and Georgia will return to the path of EU integration, as the enlargement process is moving forward. This is a priority for the European Commission. We are moving forward with Ukraine and Moldova, but with Georgia this process is at a standstill, which is unfortunate and I fear that this historic chance for Georgia may be lost," Herczynski noted.
