US Senator Jeanne Shaheen said on Sunday that "it was disappointing that Gorgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhdze did not make any proposals about what he and his government want to do to improve relations with the US."

  • "We discussed a number of concerns we have, including the statement that America was allegedly planning a coup in Georgia, which is an absolute lie. I hope that the Prime Minister and his government will take the steps they can take in the future to continue improving the relationship we have had with Georgia for more than 30 years. The U.S. has made investments, supported Georgia and participated in rebuilding schools. We have supported Georgia's democratic goals, economic development, Georgian citizens and their aspirations. It is disappointing that the Prime Minister is not interested or does not appear to be interested in continuing this relationship," Shaheen said at a press conference in Tbilisi.

For his part, Congressman Mike Turner noted that "the Prime Minister's comment was also disappointing to him":

  • "I was also disappointed by the Prime Minister's comment. He did not take responsibility for the deterioration of relations between America and Georgia. He did not make a statement about any plans that would improve relations between Georgia and America."

Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) and Congressman Mike Turner (R-OH 10th District) visited Georgia on August 9. They have already met with the President of Georgia, Salome Zurabishvili; Prime Minister of Georgia, Irakli Kobakhidze; Defense Minister, Irakli Chikovani; and CSOs’ representatives. During their bipartisan visit, they also held a informal meeting with representatives of the Georgian political parties.

They have also visited the occupation line near the occupied Tskhinvali region and the participants of the U.S. government programs that assist internally displaced persons, entrepreneurs, and students.

According to the U.S. Embassy in Tbilisi, the visit demonstrates that the United States remains fully engaged and committed to supporting the people of Georgia and their Euro-Atlantic aspirations.
