If Russia succeeds in Ukraine, I am afraid, their appetite will increase even more, and we do not rule out that they will try their luck elsewhere, - Sweden's National Security Adviser Henrik Landerholm said in an interview with "Voice of America".
As he noted, the joining of Sweden and Finland to NATO does not change anything, although Russia will try to question the unity of NATO."For quite a long time, Russia perceived Sweden and Finland as semi-allies and was not openly hostile. We are in no way hostile to Russia. In the long run - maybe not in my lifetime - but in the long run, I hope that Russia will develop in a democratic direction. We had high hopes for this in the 1990s. Russia showed and Sweden felt the consequences of their aggression. We can no longer rely on Russia's benevolence and must seek our security with others in a broader context. If Russia succeeds in Ukraine, I'm afraid their appetite will grow even more, and we can't rule out that they will try their luck elsewhere. At first, perhaps, not by military methods, but by using everything else as a weapon, which is a characteristic of Russian politics. They will also try to question the unity of NATO. We cannot rule this out. We have to be careful. We must prepare. We must arm ourselves and be prepared for the unlikely, but entirely possible, events. This has been a hot topic in Sweden for the past few weeks. Some opponents say we have sounded the alarm. I wouldn't say so. We just have to prepare more or less like we did during the Cold War, when we didn't rule anything out. We are strong supporters of Ukraine. Our population is a strong supporter of Ukraine. Over the past two years, we have provided Ukraine with €3 billion in aid, largely for military support. If Ukraine loses this war, it will be disastrous not only for Europe in general, but also for Sweden and our region in particular. This will intensify Russia's desire to interfere in our affairs and try to divide the EU and NATO countries. So, weakness is an invitation for Russia," said Henrik Landerholm.
As for the granting of EU status to Georgia, according to him, the key to Georgia's joining the European Union and NATO is, for the most part, not in Brussels, this key is in Tbilisi."I would say that it was absolutely necessary for Georgia to open the prospect of joining the European Union. There are many things to do to achieve the ultimate goal. It was also an important step to give new strength to the hope of Georgians that in the geopolitical situation Georgia is in, there are other opportunities for the country besides the mistaken idea that Georgia's future is close cooperation with Russia. On the part of the EU, it was a politically and practically necessary step. Regarding membership in both unions, it is up to Tbilisi to take the necessary steps. Joining the European Union is based on many conditions, and Georgia's success in this effort largely depends on the Georgian government. To reach the final goal, the country must successfully go through this process, which can be very uncomfortable at times. "I don't see the advancement of the issue of Georgia joining NATO until the issue of Ukraine is resolved," said Henrik Landerholm.
