The Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development, Levan Davitashvili has announced that the winner in the Anaklia Deep Sea Port private partnership selection competition is the Chinese-Singaporean consortium, which will be officially announced in the coming days.
He also said that a state company “Anaklia Deep Sea Port” owning 51% of the project will soon start its part of the construction.
- "The United States respects countries' sovereign decisions regarding who they want to engage or do business with. We note, however, that when doing business with PRC entities, it is important to conduct thorough due diligence, understand the potential impacts on critical infrastructure and sovereignty, and ensure the economic relationship is fair, transparent, and benefits Georgia," a State Department Spokesperson told the Accent.
On October 25 2023 the United States Senate Foreign Relations Committee’s subcommittee on Europe and Regional Security Cooperation convened a hearing on “Assessing the Department of State’s Strategy for Security in the Black Sea region.”
When asked, about PRC’s effort to develop a port in Anaklia, Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, James O’Brien asserted the U.S. has made it clear that “that critical infrastructure should not belong to states that will steal or suborn the countries in which they operate” and “that includes port facilities like the one in Anaklia.”
