The U.S. Department of State believes that the development of the Anaklia deep water port would be a huge contribution as Georgia develops its role in the Middle Corridor.

"We hope to see the Government of Georgia move forward to tender the Anaklia project," a State Department Spokesperson told the Accent.

According to the Spokesperson, "there is no greater supporter than the United States for the sovereignty and independence of the three countries in the South Caucasus."

"Over the last 30 years, the United States and Georgia have become strategic partners, working together toward our shared vision of Georgia, fully integrated into the Euro-Atlantic family of nations and part of a Europe whole, free, and at peace. The United States has long supported Georgia’s economic development and we recognize the opportunities for developing the needed infrastructure to support the Middle Corridor concept. Specifically, we strongly support the development of the Anaklia deep water port, which is critical infrastructure for Georgia to develop. It would be a huge contribution as Georgia develops its role in the Middle Corridor, to bring goods from Central Asia to Europe. Development of the port would also bring jobs to Georgia and the region. We hope to see the Government of Georgia move forward to tender the project. In addition, the Development Finance Corporation supported the expansion of the Pace Terminal at Poti Seaport through a $50 million loan. The terminal expansion, which opened in January 2022, more than doubled the cargo capacity for the terminal, an important step that moves Georgia closer to its goal of becoming an East-West trade hub," the State Department Spokesperson said.

Given Russia's war against Ukraine, the Middle Corridor is considered a very important route in the EU.

The Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (TITR), known as the Middle Corridor, starts from Southeast Asia and China, and runs through Kazakhstan, the Caspian Sea, Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey before reaching southern or Central Europe. The route is the shortest from western China to eastern Europe. On March 31, 2022, the governments of Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan and Turkey signed a declaration on improving the transportation potential through the region.

As for the development of the Anaklia deep water port, the fate of the project has been in doubt since 2019. In January 2020 The Government of Georgia decided to terminate its contract with the Anaklia Development Consortium (ADC) . It said that "the Consortium failed to provide pre-construction and construction financial guarantees, as well as to find a real investor." ADC, which spent tens of millions of dollars on the project, constantly claimed that the authorities created artificial problems for the Anaklia project. On December 9, 2022 the Vice Prime Minister, Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia, Levan Davitashvili announced that "the Georgian government will hire consulting groups to start the construction of the Anaklia deep water port."

The Anaklia deep water port project, a major seaport project on Georgia’s Black Sea coast located few kilometers away from Russian occupied Abkhazia region, has strong backing from the U.S.
