UK Foreign Secretary James Cleverly urged Georgia to strengthen its commitment to media freedom, a flourishing civil society and judicial independence.

At the joint briefing with Georgian Foreign Minister Ilia Darchiashvili, James Cleverly said the UK-Georgia relationship went beyond cooperation in military, cyber security and countering disinformation spheres but also included joint work.

“Georgia has made great steps towards democracy since Margaret Thatcher’s historic visit in 1987. And to anchor democracy and strengthen your institutions against those who seek to undermine them, we urge you to renew and strengthen your commitment to media freedom, a flourishing civil society and judicial independence,” he said.

James Cleverly added that the UK would remain “a firm and passionate friend” of Georgia, saying he was looking forward to taking the UK-Georgia relationship “to even greater strength.”
