A new ferry service between Romania and Georgia has been launched. The inaugural voyage took place on June 27, 2023, departing from the port of Constanta and arriving at the port of Poti after a two-night journey.
"From our standpoint the opening and we hope the continous operation of the line will be very important for the connection between Georgia, South Caucasus and even Central Asia with the EU. As you know the connection between Georgia and the EU countries is one of the priorities of the European Commission. We hope this is just the beginning and that the trade will go further," Romanian Ambassador to Georgia, Razvan Rotundu told the Accent.
"The advantage of the Constanta port is that it has a direct connection with the Danube and thus the containers shipped to it may be futher transported to Germany by the Danube," he added.
Some context: The ferry service, which carries both passengers and cargo, is operated by a Georgian company called E60 Shipping.
In 2019 Georgia, Romania, Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan signed a document establishing the Black Sea-Caspian Sea Freight Transport Corridor.
According to the foreign ministers of all four countries, this new corridor will be the shortest, most profitable way to connect Central Asia to Europe through the two seas.
