A US State Department Spokesperson has said that "the United States has made clear the steps Georgia’s government can take to demonstrate it is serious about improving its relationship with the United States."

As the spokesperson told the Accent, "the United States has been a partner to Georgia and the Georgian people for 33 years, and a strong supporter of Georgia's independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity throughout that time."

  • "The United States has made clear the steps Georgia’s government can take to demonstrate it is serious about improving its relationship with the United States. Regarding continuing anti-democratic actions taken by the Georgian Dream government – as Vice President Vance said in Munich, you cannot win a democratic mandate by censoring your opponents or putting them in jail, nor can you win one by disregarding your basic electorate on questions like who gets to be a part of our shared society," said the spokesperson in a written response sent to the Accent.

These remarks delivered by US Vice-President JD Vance at the Munich Security Conference on February 14 were not related to Georgia, although the State Department used his quote specifically in relation to Georgia and the "anti-democratic actions" of the "Georgian Dream".

  • "We continue to evaluate our approach to Georgia to advance American interests," the spokesperson added.

More context: Levan Davitashvili, Georgian Dream First Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development, who is visiting the US now, on April 24 stated the following:

"We had a fairly long meeting at the US State Department, which covered all aspects of cooperation between Georgia and America, and also touched upon the problems that existed in the relations between the two countries in the past years, but the main emphasis was placed on the prospects for cooperation, where the positions of the new US administration and Georgia are completely consistent with each other."
