The US Department of Defense currently has no plans to establish a permanent military base in Georgia.

"We will continue to maintain a rotational force presence in Georgia to support bilateral security cooperation activities under the Georgia Defense and Deterrence Enhancement Initiative," Marine Corps Lieutenant Colonel Anton T. Semelroth, Department of Defense Spokesman told the Accent.

As for the rotational force presence, he said that "one recent example is the deployment of elements of the U.S. Army’s 4th Security Forces Assistance Brigade to Georgia since last October".

What is Georgia Defense and Deterrence Enhancement Initiative (GDDEI)

The Georgia Defense and Deterrence Enhancement Initiative (GDDEI) is a new bilateral U.S.-Georgia security cooperation initiative designed to enable further modernization and development of the Georgian Ministry of Defense (MoD) and Georgian Defense Forces (GDF) in support of shared security interests.

GDDEI consists of two components. One component focuses on organizational change to build Georgia’s institutional capacity in the defense sector. The second focuses on strengthening GDF capabilities to train and employ brigades in combined arms operations necessary for territorial defense.

According to GDDEI, the United States will continue military cooperation, ship visits, and joint military exercises that aim to help Georgia further develop its defense capabilities and interoperability with NATO forces.

4th Security Forces Assistance Brigade Deployment to Georgia

The 4th Security Forces Assistance Brigade was deployed to Europe in support of U.S. Army Europe and Africa in fall 2021 to support and assist U.S. allied and partner nation militaries in the European theater. 4th SFAB did this by establishing sustainable partnerships with the land forces of Georgia, Latvia, North Macedonia, Poland and Romania in October 2021, beginning with six-month rotations.

The 4th SFAB initiatives include advising, supporting, liaising and assessing military capabilities of allied and partner forces. Building trust through persistent presence aims to improve the security environment and to ensure continued interoperability.
